Working out of the cellar in their old familial house- an old wine merchants’ home from the 1930s, brothers Franco and Gianni Calcagno took on Tuscany-based enologist Alessandro Biancolin. Biancolin who was an oenologist at Passopiscario and Petra in Suvereto, brings an understanding of what makes a great wine. Keeping their ego out of the way, the winemaking at Calcagno is intended to let the vineyards express themselves through wines that are elegant, supple and complex.</div>

With vineyards rising to 650 feet above sea level , volcanic soils from eruptions and broken lava flows transition to increasingly fine, volcanic sand as you climb the mountain. As in Burgundy, producers on Mount Enta like Calcagno have begun to recognize the distinctive characters of wines from specific parcels and sites, expressing them in the Feudo di Mezzo contrada-designated wine.<br />
<br />
Ian D'Agata of Vinous Media said "Calcagno represents everything that Italy does so well in wine. An older generation of sharp, passionate individuals, a small vineyard holding in an exceptionally high quality viticultural area, and belief in local high quality native grape varieties. Calcagno is now into its fifth generation, and Giusy, daughter of Franco Calcagno (who runs the estate with his brother Gianni), is slowly starting to have a bigger role. The wines are made with the help of winemaker Alessandro Bianco, formerly of Passopisciaro, who joined in 2010 and whose first full vintage was the 2011."<br />
<br />
The Fuedo di Mezzo 2014 was rated 94 points by D'Agata. He said "Dark red. Very deep long and rich with spicy, syrupy red berry and cherry aromas and flavors of noteworthy intensity. Finishes long and suave with an almost smoky note of crushed rocks. Ages twelve months in used oak <em>barriques</em>.<br />

One such producer is Macchialupa is from the Campania region near Naples.<br />

This is regarded as one of the newer exciting estates to produce fine examples of classic wines from the area. The estate was established in 2001 by Angelo Valentino, an oenologist specialising in Fiano di Avellino and Aglianico di Taurasi, and Giuseppe Ferrara, an agronomist viticulturist specialising in Greco di Tufo. Both Angelo and Giuseppe are committed to producing outstanding wines<br />

The classic wines arrived in Australia for the first time this year:<br />

<li>Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2016 Fruit and floral driven aromas, a full body with freshness and intensive aromatic
persistence</li>
<li>Greco di Tufo DOCG 2016 Aroma of intense fruit and the scent of
apricot. The taste is dry, warm, soft with a full fresh body</li>
<li>Falanghina IGT 2016 The aroma is fruity with a scent of peaches,
pineapple, magnolia and honey. The taste is dry, warm and soft, a full body with
freshness and intensive aromatic persistence</li>
<li>Taurasi Aglianico DOCG 2011 The aroma is intense and complex, slightly ethereal,
fruity, flowery and spicy with the scent of blackberries marasca (wild cherry)
violet, tobacco, cinnamon and vanilla. The taste is dry with a good
concentration of tannins, acidity and sapidity, with a full body, well balanced and

In the great pantheon of Italian wine, the importance of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is celebrated for its ageability, structure, cult status and sophisticated palate, Brunello di Montalcino essentially owes its impressive reputation to three things: a clone known as Sangiovese Grosso, the extraordinary microclimate of the region, and the Biondi Santi family which today continue to make Brunello under the Le Chiuse and Biondi Santi labels. Were any of these factors different or missing, Brunello as we know it would likely not have happened, and it would be a very sad world indeed.<br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">At 150 years old, Brunello di Montalcino is a relative upstart in the world of Italian wine. In the mid-1800’s, Clemente Santi realized that one strain of grape growing on his estate seemed to withstand both rot and phylloxera. He focused his attention on a clone of Sangiovese that he called Brunello, or “little brown one.” (This clone later was isolated and named BBS11.) His son, Feruccio Biondi-Santi, was the first person to bottle and release a single-varietal wine fermented from this grape; a handful of bottles remain from his 1881 inaugural bottling. Arguably, the Biondi-Santi family has had a greater impact on Brunello than any other family has had on any other Italian wine. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">While the idea that Feruccio “invented” Brunello is more myth than fact–historical evidence dates award-winning Montalcino wines to years well before 1881–there is no disputing that the family established guidelines for the Brunello di Montalcino, shaped those guidelines with an iron fist, and remained the only makers of the appellation until around W.W. II. Moreover, by intentionally keeping production low and pricing the wine high, by choosing to skip vintages they saw as inferior, and by mindfully creating a wine that requires intense ageing, the Biondi-Santi family effectively created the Brunello mystique–a magical wine that you have to pay a lot to get and wait to enjoy.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">But the other important piece in the Brunello puzzle is the region itself. While it’s indisputable that the Biondi-Santi family recognized potential of the Sangiovese Grosso and that they developed the grape into its quintessential expression, neither of those achievements would mean a thing were it not for the extraordinary terroir of Montalcino. Brunello begins around the hilltop town of Montalcino located in the southern central reaches of Toscana, just south of Firenze. Its elevation that ranges between 820 and 2,170 feet means that Montalcino, more than any other important wine growing area in Toscana, benefits from the Mediterranean breezes that blow across the region. Moreover, Montalcino has intense climactic diversity; in the region’s approximately 3,000 acres, there are two different major microclimates, five separate climactic zones and 24 unique sub-microclimates.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">To understand the singularity of Montalcino, you need to consider that although the town is only 25 miles south of Siena, it is higher, dryer and cooler than the surrounding Tuscan regions–most of Toscana has a yearly rainfall of 35” a year; Montalcino receives about 28”. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">The township of Montalcino essentially splits the DOCG area into two broad categories: those vineyards north of the town, and those to the south. Northern vineyards have calcareous clay soil, higher altitudes, a cooler microclimate and they create more aromatic, structured and elegant wines. The vineyards to the south possess a more Mediterranean climate, a lower altitude, and sandier soil; these factors cause grapes to ripen about a week earlier than those in the north and to create fuller, juicier, rounder, more approachable wines.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">However, because of the extreme popularity of Brunello, the uniformly high price the wine garners, the multiple microclimates and the varying quality of the wine, some winemakers (including Franco Biondi-Santi) are arguing the need for the DOC to separate the DOCG zone into five smaller sub-zones. Statistics illustrate the argument for stronger regulation; in 1960 there were only eleven bottlers of Brunello and 157 acres planted, but by 2004 those numbers had exploded to 175 bottlers and almost 6,300 acres. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">Minimum aging requirements in Brunello di Montalcino DOCG tend to run longer than other zones in Italy. The Brunello normale is an annual production with a requisite aging period of 4 years (this involves a combination of minimum 2 years in barrel and at least four months in bottle). Even though the total minimum aging requirement is less than four years, producers abiding by Brunello DOCG cannot release wines until 48 months after the vintage year. Riserva denotes a bottle that is crafted exclusively in vintages that are deemed of high quality, derived from the producer’s best grapes, and aged for a minimum of five years (a combination of minimum three years in barrel and at least six months in bottle); the same rule regarding release date applies to productions of both riserva and regular Brunello.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">Brunello di Montalcino varies by producer and microclimate, but in general it is medium to full-bodied, with a heady aroma of black fruits that are echoed on the palate. Many people also note black spices like licorice, a whiff of bitter orange and a slight earthy quality. Alcohol percentages range between 13.0-14.5%. Brunello is made to be aged. In general, it is best starting at about ten years after vintage. The 2010 vintage of Brunello has been lauded as a benchmark, but even wines from “off” vintages can be excellent.</span><br />

Even if you haven’t heard of Franciacorta, chances are you already love it. Made with the same grape varieties and produced in the same method as Champagne, Franciacorta is Italy’s answer to luxurious bubbly.<br />
<em></em><br />
The history of Franciacorta’s success is relatively recent; and its style and extremely limited production give it an allure all its own. Comparisons to Champagne make it easier to explain to the uninitiated, but Franciacorta’s style is 100 per cent Italian. Straight to the point, the differences between the two sparklers are not vast. The method of production in Italian is metodo classico, which is interchangeable with méthode traditionnelle or champenoise in French; which means the wine undergoes a secondary fermentation within the bottle. The resulting sparkling wine is characterised by a fine, persistent, effervescent bead. Other sparkling wines such as<br />
Prosecco get their characteristic bubbles from the Charmat method – when the secondary fermentation occurs in large tanks, rather than in the bottle.<br /> Some consider Franciacorta to be a richer style of sparkling wine compared to Champagne, and this is due to the location of Franciacorta being a bit more southerly than the area of Champagne. Chardonnay, Pinot Nero and Pinot Bianco, the varieties of grapes used in each style, tend to produce a less acidic profile in the Franciacorta vineyards, than those grown in Champagne.<br />
<img alt="" src="http://www.italianicious.com.au/uploads/italianicious/articles/Enoteca_Sileno-Franciacorta_wine_article-glass_300px.jpg" style="float: left; height: 450px; width: 300px;" />The area of Franciacorta is a collection of rolling hills situated between the diminutive Lago d’Iseo and the larger and more famous Garda and Como lakes, in the eastern reaches of Lombardy. The area is protected from, but also nurtured by the harsh climate of the nearby Alps. Lake breezes aerate the maturing grape vines, and despite reaching high temperatures during summer days, the nights are dramatically cooler thanks to the proximate high altitude weather systems.<br />
Franciacorta’s production is dwarfed by Champagne’s, which makes its value all the more extraordinary. Franciacorta only exports between 11 and 15 per cent of what it produces, whereas France exports about 50 percent of its Champagne. Overall production in Franciacorta comes from about 100 producers growing grapes over a total of about 6700 acres, which are bound by the most rigorous production code in Europe. Despite these modest numbers and stricter rules for production (Champagne has about 19,000 houses over 80,000 acres), Franciacorta’s growth skyrocketed from 2.9 million bottles in 1996 to 6.7 million over just 10 years.<br />

It is no coincidence that the geographical location of Franciacorta played a significant role in the ascendancy of this small wine-growing area. As a close neighbour of banking and commercial hubs Milan and Brescia, Franciacorta is located in the heart of Italy’s most prosperous and economically robust region. Proximity to these centres of wealth has also elevated Franciacorta’s reputation for tourism and gastronomy.<br />
The typical characteristics of Franciacorta are primary fruit aromas of peach, apricot, nectarine and citrus, then secondary floral and spice aromas, in addition to the typical yeasty quality of metodo classico wine. It’s dry with a very fine persistent bead, and can often display mineral qualities on the finish. Drink Franciacorta with aged goat’s cheese drizzled with honey, roasted or barbecued quail, butternut pumpkin ravioli with brown butter and sage, or a more traditional match like raw oysters or caviar.<br />

followed by Amarone and by the sparklings of Franciacorta, almost at the same level of those of Trentodoc. Women also have a leaning toward wines with a lower alcoholic content (13%) and organic, vegan and biodynamic products (11%). The perception regarding the greatest influencers for Italian women is just as interesting, since according to the sample, those that seduce through narrating wine are, respectively, a grower telling stories about her vineyard (22%), a winemaker doing the same (20%), a chef that pairs a wine to a dish (15%), a wine journalist (13%), and a sommelier that explains what is behind a label (12%). </div>

Finally, a man that does not drink wine is seen as boring or not very interesting for 61% of the sample, while one that does, and knows about it, is seen as rich in culture and tradition (32%), interesting (26%) and fun (24%).</div>

In general the Nobile wines were in good shape, but I have a strong leaning to the 2012's over the 11's. The Valdipiatta is a classic case of an elegant 2011 compared to a robust and full bodied 2012. The 2012 Valdipiatta is a must wine to look out for. It will live and improve for many more years.</div>

There are three principle grapes used in Franciacorta of which Chardonnay is by far the most prominent. Chardonnay has been grown in Franciacorta for some decades now, although it is difficult to pin down the exact date of the introduction of this eminently noble white grape variety. Some producers, who recognised its potential and the qualities of its wine, were likely utilising it already in the early 1950s. It certainly began to be widely planted in Franciacorta around 1950, appearing in vineyards right alongside pinot bianco. This promiscuous planting led to confusion between the two grape varieties, since no one was much concerned with maintaining a clear distinction between the two. But even in those early years, when the nursery operators obtained genetic material for propagating budwood for planting, they were always looking for vines with the best growth characteristics, which meant crop consistency, good cluster formation, high sugar levels, and a golden colour in the skin. That turned out to mean chardonnay. Only in 1963 was a clear distinction drawn between the two varieties, when under the auspices of the Istituto Agrario in San Michele all’Adige, a vineyard was planted 100% to chardonnay, from vines imported from France. That enabled differences between the two grapes to be finally drawn quite clearly. And that process highlighted the superior qualities of chardonnay, which resulted from the grape’s successful adaption to conditions in Franciacorta, where it found a habitat very similar to its original homeland. In 1978, chardonnay was officially listed in the national catalogue of grape varieties, and in 1980 it became authorised and recommended by the province of Brescia. Chardonnay vineyards currently occupy over 2,000 officially-enrolled hectares in Franciacorta, some 80% of its total area. </div>

The chardonnay vine displays average vigour, and has a light green leaf and a distinctive cluster that is greenish in colour tending to yellow, with average compactness; the grapes have hardy, thick skins. Chardonnay is particularly subject to the <em>Flavescenza dorata</em> disease, which over the last few years has devastated numerous vineyards. </div>

Chardonnay has pride of place in the base wines for Franciacorta DOCG, but has a much smaller role in the Curtefranca Bianco still wine. Wines from chardonnay display appreciable weight, a bouquet that is intense, fragrant, and complex, with varietal aromas of fruit and flowers, and it exhibits full body and an appealing crispness. </div>

Pinot Nero is the second most-widely planted grape in Franciacorta, occupying some 15% of the total area. Originating in Burgundy, the variety can behave in quite different ways, and at times can react quite unpredictably to its environment. It is capable of impressive results as a red wine and as a sparkling wine. </div>

The pinot noir vine is fairly hardy and robust. The dark green leaves are normally 5-lobed, and the cone-shaped cluster very compact and rather small in size. Pinot noir is utilised above all in Franciacorta Millesimato and in Riserva DOCG, since it provides added body and longevity to these wines. It is also crucial for the cuvées of Franciacorta Rosé, which must contain a minimum of 25% pinot noir.</div>

Pinot bianco is the third variety utilised in Franciacorta. Of French origin, it belongs to the extensive pinot family of grapes, and its vineyards now occupy about 5% of Franciacorta’s total area.</div>

The Pinot bianco vine is quite vigorous; it exhibits a deep green leaf, and its clusters tends to appear less golden and more loosely structured than that of chardonnay. Pinot bianco is not used 100% in the base wines for Franciacorta nor in the Curtefranca Bianco still wines; it may constitute up to 50% of the blends for these wines. The wine from this grape is full-bodied and elegant, with a generous acidity, while its bouquet offers impressions of just-baked bread. Some ageing will bring rich notes of bitter almond. </div>

<span class="testo11nero"></span> Completing Doctor Wine’s ‘Essential Guide’ took a lot of effort but it was also very gratifying. I can now take advantage of some of the tasting we did for the guide to look at the area I love the most: Montalcino.<br /> Last year, writing about 2008, I criticized the various doomsayers, especially foreign ones, who were too negative and fretful in their evaluations of vintage 2008. Some of the Brunello Riserva 2008 that have come out have confirmed that it was an interesting year, especially for a few ‘enclaves’ in the area. Vintage 2009 is another story because it was a truly difficult year and it is important to take certain factors into consideration. I totally agree with the opinion of Andrea Gabbrielli, who knows Montalcino well, that ‘’you cannot judge a territory by the weather’’, this also because when things get tough the best producers, the best vineyards and, above all, how they were managed made a big difference in the final product. This does not mean the weather is not important, on the contrary. Weather makes the difference between a great year and a minor one, the important thing is not to generalize. Another consideration is that Montalcino is a very complex area with a wide variety of soils, microclimates and water resources in the various zones and subzones (if which there at least eight) and this creates substantial differences which in poor years are amplified. In Montalcino, 2009 was complex due to two particular and unfavorable situations that came together. At the end of May there was too much rain which delayed the growth of the vines. Then a heatwave struck in July, August and September with average temperatures 2°C above the norm for the past decade. During this time the difference in day and nighttime temperatures were below normal. Making matters worse was that there was no rain during the hot months which stunted growth and caused many grapes to dry out. Furthermore, the best soils are those that drain well and so they did not retain the early rainfall. Obviously, the hottest and dries area suffered the most, especially in those vineyards where some producers <img alt="" src="http://www.doctorwine.it/upload/images/Vendemmia%202.jpg" style="float: right; height: 263px; margin: 10px; width: 350px;" />continued to follow a local tradition and prune their leaves leaving the grape bunches exposed to the sun and scalding heat. The best bet was to leave the bunches as covered as possible and to work the soil in such a way as to retain any humidity. Some zones have a deep clay substrata that holds the moisture better and those vines with deeper roots, the older ones, probably suffered less if they benefitted from having sufficient covering by the leaves. (It is illegal to irrigate in Montalcino, an interesting question but not one for this article). Due to the delays these conditions caused, the harvest period came late yet some producers decided to harvest early due to the poor condition of their grapes and the results were dismal. Many others waited too long and got caught by the rains of late September, which were not much compared to the heavy rain that came in October and caused even more problems, although not for everyone. Nevertheless, there were produces who made the right choices and came out with wines that were a tribute to their intelligence, agricultural skill and economic sacrifice (with little Brunello made). Another determining factor was the possibility for some to make a careful selection of grapes, discarding the ones that had dried out due to the heat and those that had mold due to too much rain during harvest. Sorting tables were a big help in doing as were the automatic sorting machines.<br /> Given that it was such a complex year, it was strange that nine million bottles of Brunello 2009 DOCG were produced, more than in good years like 2006 or 2007 and from the same number of vines. Is this Italian fluke? How was it possible?<br /><img alt="" src="http://www.doctorwine.it/upload/images/Bicchieri.jpg" style="float: left; height: 263px; margin: 10px; width: 350px;" />I had expected a significant drop in production, also because those who made some excellent Brunello 2009 had a significant drop in yield. And then there were those like Pieve di S. Restituta, who did not even produce a Brunello because they did not think it could be good enough.<br /> A friend finally explained it to me. In simple terms it was this: Brunello is a wine that demands the best price through the big distributors and so bottlers and others pay very well for Brunello even in poorer years, when it is easier to buy the wine to then re-sell it under another name with a DOCG label. Thus in difficult years a lot of wine, which nevertheless respects DOCG regulations, reaches the market through this channel and allows the winemakers to balance their budgets. I, personally, believe that this harms Brunello’s image also for consumers who may not buy it often but are large in number, especially over the long term. But that’s the way the world turns: one wants everything and right away without thinking of the consequences.<br /> In the end, what we have are very few Brunello 2009 that are truly exceptional, while the number of good ones is on the rise despite the difficulties faced, an indication that a growing number of producers have clear ideas on how to deal with adversities both in the vineyard and in the winery. Unfortunately, there was also a lot of mediocre wine. It is amazing how three of the best Brunello 2009 came from the same area, a cru I consider to be the best in Montalcino: eastern Cerbaie. Here, three producers, two of whom are very famous and the other a rising star, gave us not only some excellent wines but also wines from that a cru that adequately demonstrated the difference the altitude of a vineyard can make.
